Fisherman Soup | Rivers Native Soup

Fisherman's Soup

Fisherman soup is a very popular soup in Rivers state, Nigeria. It is said that this is the go to soup for most fishermen because the soup is made from the seafood they caught for the day, hence the name fisherman's soup. It is basically a seafood soup the is spicy and flavorful. You don't have to break the bank to make this delicious soup because you can use any seafood of your choice or whatever you can afford. It is simple but very delicious meal that can be enjoyed by the family. Give this a try and I promise you that you will enjoy it.

Directions

  • Clean snails, crabs, shrimps and catfish.
  • Cut onions and pound or blend fresh pepper.
  • In a pan, add yam and water, cover to cook until done.
  • Blend crayfish and uziza seeds
  • In a pan, add snails, chopped onions, salt, pepper, seasoning cube, water and cover to cook for 10 minutes.
  • Add palm oil, ground crayfish, ground uziza seeds , catfish and cook for another 5 minutes.
  • After 5 minutes, add uziza leaves, bitterleaf, periwinkle, seasoning cube and more water as needed, cover to cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Pound the yam when it is done and add to the soup. The yam is acting as a thickener. There are other substitutes  such as yam flour, cocoyam, ofor and achi. Also add the crab and cook until the soup begins to thicken. The soup should not be too runny or thick. Add shrimps, fresh pepper and cook for less than 5  minutes. Check for seasoning and add to your taste
  • The soup cooks very fast, most of the time spent making this soup is the time spent prepping for it.


 Ingredients: 

 2 large catfish 

10 large W. African snails

 1 cup periwinkles

 4 female crabs 

14 large shrimps 

1/2 cup palm oil

 1/2 large onion 

1/4 cup ground crayfish 

1 tbsp uziza seeds

 1/4 cup washed bitterleaf

 1/4 cup dried uziza leaf 

3 seasoning cubes 

4 scotch bonnet pepper 

1 habanero pepper 

Yam (4 inches) 

Salt to taste
