nigerian funkaso | punkaso

Funkaso drizzled with honey

Funkaso is a very popular meal/snack from the Northern part of Nigeria. Punkaso or funkaso is made by combining wheat flour with another flour with some other ingredients and deep fried in vegetable oil. It can be enjoyed as a meal with miya taushe or as a snack. Funkaso is not a sweet snack on its own that why it is sweetened with sugar or honey. When sugar or honey is drizzled over it, the taste is unbelievable. So if you are looking for a meal and snack inspiration, why don't you give this recipe a try. You will love it.

Directions

  • Add wheat flour, all purse flour, sugar, yeast and salt to a bowl and mix to combine.
  • Add warm water to the dry ingredients gradually until it forms a pasty consistency. It should be a little bit thicker than a puff puff dough. Beat it to create gluten for 2 - 3 minutes.
  • Cover ant put in a warm place to poof for 60 minutes.
  • After 60 minutes, heat up some vegetable oil  on medium heat to deep fry the funkaso. 
  • Once the oil is hot enough, grab a handful of dough, make a hole in the middle and lower it into the oil. Or spread the dough on the back of a cooking spoon, make a hole in the middle and lower into oil. 
  • Fry the funkaso on both sides til golden brown. Enjoy with miyan taushe, honey or sugar.


Ingredients 

1  1/2 cups wheat flour

 1/2 cup all purpose flour

 1 tbsp sugar 

1/2 tbsp instant yeast

 1/2 tsp salt

 1 1/2 cups warm water 

Vegetable oil for frying
