how to cut pineapple without waste

How to cut pineapple without waste

It is very challenging to cut pineapple without losing some of the fleshy parts. There are some tools created to prevent such loss. The pineapple eye remover and the pineapple corer are some examples. As the names imply. the eye remover removes the eyes of the pineapple while the corer removes the pineapple. In case you don't have these tools, you can use things you already have in your kitchen to do it such as a fork or a pairing knife.

Directions

  • Scrub the skin of the pineapple with soap and water. Rinse and pat dry.
  • Break off the crown of the pineapple. With a sharp knife, cut off the top and bottom of the pineapple (about 1 inch).
  • Place the pineapple upright and  cut the skin from top to bottom, cutting closely to the skin. Remove all the skin from the fruit. You will be left with a fleshy fruit with many eyes. Those dark spots around the pineapple are known as eyes. Pineapple seeds are also embedded in those eyes. Instead of cutting deep into the pineapple to remove those eyes, use a fork to dig each out. In doing so, you will only get rid of the eyes and preserve the surrounding flesh. Do this until you get rid of all the eyes.
  • Placing the pineapple in an upright position, cut the pineapple into four equal parts. You will notice that the core is  tough and less juicy. It is less sweet, very fibrous and not easy to ingest. Regardless of that, it is very nutritious, very high in bromelain. Bromelain is an enzyme that is believed  to treat many conditions from pain, indigestion to cancer. So do not throw it away after cutting it off the fleshy part. Though not easy to swallow, you can chew on it to get the juice, then discard the inedible part. Follow the natural line and separate the flesh part from the core. Feel free to cut the fleshy part into any shape and size. Enjoy!
