Roasted plantain | Bole

How to roast plantain on a stove top using hot sand | Bole

Roasted plantain is a Nigerian street food popularly known as bole. Bole is usually roasted over charcoal until recently when some creative people started roasting them in ovens and air fryers. Some people have even attempted to roast them on stove tops but I am going to show a more effective way of roasting plantains on a stove top. I will be using sharp sand also known as Beach sand. This method will produce the most delicious roasted plantains just like the street version roasted on charcoal.

Directions

  • Peel plantains by cutting off the top and bottom ends of the plantains. Cut a slit vertically from the top to bottom of each plantain, then separate the skin  from the fruit by peeling it off.
  • In a pot, pour in the Beach sand and heat it over medium heat.
  • When the sand is hot, place a stainless steel rack over the hot sand, then place the plantains on the rack. This will prevent the sand from coming in contact with the plantains. You can cover the pot in order to trap the heat so that they can cook through. Roast the plantains on each side for about 15 - 20 minutes. Do this multiple times until they are done and you are pleased with the color. They should be softer when done. Enjoy with palm oil or pepper sauce and fried fish or with roasted peanuts
